WELCOME TO THE NIGHTMARE
Don't worry, we'll survive this together.
In Spanish, you don't just say what happens. You say how you feel about it.
The Vibe: Objective, Cold, Certain.
"I am reporting what I see."
"Juan es alto."
Fact: I measured him. He is tall.
The Vibe: Subjective, Emotional, Uncertain.
"I am painting what I feel or want."
"Espero que Juan sea alto."
Desire: I haven't met him, but I hope he is tall.
English uses "Modal Verbs" (may, might, should, would) to express these feelings.
Spanish removes the modal verbs and changes the verb ending instead.
Subjunctive is not random. It's a chemical reaction.
Trigger Verb
Expresses the desire/doubt.
Subjunctive Verb
Changes to reflect the mood.
If Subject 1 is the same as Subject 2, drop the "Que" and use the Infinitive.
Why do we need Subjunctive for two people, but not for one?
"Yo quiero salir."
"I want to leave."
There is only ONE person involved. I control my own body. There is no doubt or conflict. I decide, and I do.
Result: We use the Infinitive (the raw verb).
"Yo quiero que tú salgas."
"I want you to leave."
There are TWO people involved. I cannot control your body directly. I can only wish or ask.
Result: We need the Subjunctive to show that my desire travels across to you.
Think of it this way: You have the remote control for your own life (Infinitive). But you don't have the remote control for other people. When you try to change someone else's channel (their actions), you are entering the zone of Uncertainty & Influence. That zone is the Subjunctive.
How to build the Subjunctive from scratch.
Start with the present indicative "Yo".
Essential for irregulars! [cite: 13, 21]
Remove the ending to find the stem.
Now you have the base.
Add the opposite vowel ending.
Subjunctive activated!
If the main verb fits one of these categories, you usually need Subjunctive.
Wanting someone to do something.
How a situation makes you feel.
Opinions without a specific owner.
Recommendations and orders.
Questioning reality.
"God willing" / Strong Hope.
Wanting someone else to do something.
English Logic (Infinitive)
"I want you to clean the house."
Spanish Logic (Subjunctive)
"Yo quiero que tú limpies la casa."
Literal: "I want that you clean..."
Remember:
Two different people = Subjunctive.
Feelings trigger the "Mood" (Subjunctive).
Me alegra que...
...tú estés aquí.
(I'm glad that you are here)
Me gusta que...
...nosotros viajemos.
(I like that we travel)
Me molesta que...
...él llegue tarde.
(It bothers me that he arrives late)
Siento que...
...tú estés enfermo.
(I'm sorry that you are sick)
Opinions that don't belong to a specific person.
Any expression starting with "Es..." that is NOT a fact triggers Subjunctive.
Nutritionist says:
"Es importante que nosotros comamos verduras."
Subject Change: It is important (General) -> We eat (Specific).
Advice, Suggestions & Requests.
Recomendar

The switch between Reality and Uncertainty.
You believe it represents a fact.
Use INDICATIVE
"Creo que Juan viene."
Fact for me: He is coming.
You question reality or deny it.
Use SUBJUNCTIVE
"No creo que Juan venga."
Uncertainty: Maybe he comes, maybe not.
The strongest way to hope.
It comes from the Arabic "Law sha' Allah" (If God wills). It expresses a hope that is heavily desired but out of your control.
Always Subjunctive
It never uses the Indicative.
"Que" is Optional
Ojalá que llueva = Ojalá llueva.
Strong Desire
"¡Ojalá (que) ganes la lotería!"
I hope you win the lottery! 🤞
"Ojalá no llueva mañana."
I hope it doesn't rain tomorrow.
