The "What" El árbol
Direct Object

2. The "Preposition Trap"

English needs a "bridge". Spanish connects directly.

English (Verb + Bridge) Spanish Verb The Result
To look for Buscar
Busco las llaves
Busco por las llaves
To listen to Escuchar
Escucho la música
Escucho a la música
To wait for Esperar
Espero el tren
Espero por el tren

Why is this crucial?

Because there is no preposition (bridge), the noun receives the action DIRECTLY. This allows us to use the Pronouns.

ENGLISH

I look for the book.

Connection Blocked

SPANISH

Busco el libro.

Logic Formula

Busco el libro Lo busco.

Common "Gringo" Mistakes

Watch out for these 3 classic errors.

1. The Phantom "A"

"I listen TO music"

Escucho a la música

Escucho la música
2. The "Late" Pronoun

"I see IT"

Yo veo lo

Yo lo veo
3. Missing "It"

"Do you have it?"

Sí, tengo.

Sí, lo tengo

3. The Personal "A"

Unique Rule

Unlike English, Spanish requires a "bridge" when the Direct Object is a Specific Person.

Object = Thing

Yo veo el auto.

No "a" needed

Object = Person

Yo veo A María.

Mandatory bridge for people.

Exception: The verb Tener (to have) never uses the personal "a".

"Tengo dos hermanos" (NOT: Tengo a...)
