When to Use the Imperfect Subjunctive

The 5 Main Rules & Contexts:

WEIRDO in the past: Main verb in the past or conditional tense → subjunctive in the subordinate clause.
Example: El médico recomendó que comieras menos grasas.
Hypothetical "Si" (If) clauses: Si + [Imperfect Subjunctive] + [Conditional] → unreal or improbable situation.
Example: Si tuviera más dinero, viajaría por el mundo.
"Como si" (As if): Hypothetical comparison, contrary to reality → always imperfect subjunctive.
Example: Me miró como si me conociera.
Politeness (Cortesía): Querer / poder / deber → very polite request.
Example: Quisiera una mesa, por favor.
"Ojalá" (impossible desire): Ojalá + imperfect subj. → an impossible or highly unlikely wish right now.
Example: ¡Ojalá fuera verano!

How to Conjugate the Imperfect Subjunctive

The Key Rule:
Take the ellos/ellas/ustedes form of the preterite → drop -ron → add the endings below. Any verb irregular in the preterite will also be irregular here.

⚠️ Crucial Rule: The Nosotros form always requires a written accent on the vowel before the ending (e.g., habláramos, comiéramos, viviéramos).

The Endings (-ra / -se forms):
Both sets (-ra and -se) are interchangeable, but the -ra endings are far more common in spoken Spanish.

Ser/Ir: fueron → fue- → fuera / fuese
Tener: tuvieron → tuvie- → tuviera / tuviese
Hacer: hicieron → hicie- → hiciera / hiciese
Poder: pudieron → pudie- → pudiera / pudiese
Decir: dijeron → dije- → dijera / dijese

EXERCISE A — Conjugación básica

Fill in the blanks with the correct imperfect subjunctive form of the verb in parentheses. You can use either the -ra or -se ending.

Me gustaría que tú (tomar) en serio la tarea.
El jefe deseaba que yo (trabajar) los domingos también.
Era importante que todos (llegar) a tiempo.
Era una lástima que usted no (poder) llegar a mi boda.

EXERCISE B — Cláusulas Hipotéticas (Si...)

Complete the conditional sentences with the imperfect subjunctive of the verb in parentheses.

Si yo (saber) hablar francés, viajaría a París.
Seríamos muy felices si nosotros (tener) un perro.
Si no (llover), podríamos dar un paseo por el parque.

Write 6 original sentences using the imperfect subjunctive. Follow these rules:

Use at least 4 of the 5 structures you learned in Part 1 (WEIRDO, si hipotético, como si, cortesía, ojalá).
Include at least one irregular verb.
At least one sentence must be about your real life.

🚨 BONUS — Common Errors to Avoid

❌ WRONG: Como si sería un rey.
✅ CORRECT: Como si fuera un rey. ("Como si" always triggers imperfect subjunctive — never conditional).
❌ WRONG: Era una lástima que no podiera ir.
✅ CORRECT: Era una lástima que no pudiera ir. (Irregular stem: pudieron → pudie-).
❌ WRONG: Si tendría más dinero....
✅ CORRECT: Si tuviera más dinero.... (After hypothetical "si", use imperfect subjunctive — never conditional).
