Explanations: How to Form the Future Tense

The future simple tense is one of the easiest tenses to conjugate in Spanish! Unlike other tenses where you drop the ending, for regular verbs, you simply add the future endings directly to the infinitive (the dictionary form of the verb, ending in -AR, -ER, or -IR). All three verb groups share the exact same endings.

Example (Hablar - to speak):
Yo hablaré, tú hablarás, él hablará, nosotros hablaremos, vosotros hablaréis, ellos hablarán.

Irregular Verbs in the Future

There are 12 important irregular verbs in the future tense. The endings are exactly the same as the regular verbs! Only the stem (la raíz) changes. We can group them to make them easier to memorize:

Explanations: When to use which?

Many learners think the difference between "Ir a + infinitive" (going to do something) and the Simple Future is about time—that "ir a" is for tomorrow and the simple future is for next year. This is a myth! In spoken Spanish, the difference is about intention and certainty, not the calendar.

1. When to use "Ir a + Infinitive" (Voy a viajar, Vamos a comer)

• Plans and Intentions: Use this when a decision has already been made, even if it's happening far in the future.
• Example: "En 2040 me voy a jubilar" (In 2040 I am going to retire - this is a solid personal plan).
• Example: "Mañana voy a ir al médico" (I have an appointment, it's a solid arrangement).

2. When to use the Simple Future

• Predictions & Forecasts: Used for weather forecasts, astrology, or distant hypothetical events.
  Example: "Mañana lloverá en Madrid" (Tomorrow it will rain in Madrid).
• Solemn Promises & Official Style: Used for wedding vows, laws, and political speeches.
  Example: "Te querré siempre" (I will love you forever).
• Probability in the Present (Futuro de probabilidad): This is the most common use of the future tense in daily speech in Spain! We use the future tense to guess or suppose something that is happening right now.
  Example: "¿Qué hora es?" ➔ "No sé, serán las cinco." (What time is it? I don't know, it must be / is probably around five).
  Example: "¿Dónde está María?" ➔ "Estará en la cafetería." (Where is Maria? She is probably in the cafeteria).

Exercise 2: Master the "Futuro de Probabilidad"

Someone asks you a question about the present, but you don't know the exact answer. Make a guess using the future simple!

1. ¿Dónde está Juan? No lo sé, (estar) en su oficina trabajando.
2. ¿Qué hora es? No tengo reloj, pero (ser) las diez de la noche.
3. María no contesta el teléfono. (Tener) mucho trabajo ahora mismo.
4. ¿Quién llama a la puerta a esta hora? (Ser) el cartero con un paquete.
