To choose the right past tense in Spanish, you have to change how you think about time. It is not just about when something happened, but how it happened.

Here are the best tricks to know exactly which tense to use in any situation:
💡 Tip 1: The "Used to" or "Was -ing" Test
Translate your thought to English. If you can say "used to [verb]" or "was/were [verb]-ing" naturally, you **must** use the Imperfect.
💡 Tip 2: The "Interruption" Rule (Working Together)
Very often, these two tenses appear in the same sentence! Use the Imperfect for the background action (what was already happening), and use the Preterite for the sudden action that interrupts it.
💡 Tip 3: Look at the Context of Time (Age vs. Specific periods)
When talking about your age or the time on the clock in the past, always use the Imperfect. But if you define a specific completed period, use the Preterite.
💡 Tip 4: Beware of Duration!
If you mention a specific duration of time (even if it is long), you must use the Preterite because the action is closed and completed.

Describe en español una situación del pasado (3 o 4 oraciones) en la que estabas haciendo algo y fuiste interrumpido/a por un acontecimiento repentino (por ejemplo, sonó el teléfono, empezó a llover, llegó una visita).
