1. The Snapshot vs. The Video

In Spanish, we use two main past tenses: the Preterite (pretérito simple/indefinido) and the Imperfect (pretérito imperfecto).

• The Preterite is like a snapshot. It tells you exactly when something happened and focuses on completed actions with a clear beginning and end (a closed chapter).
• The Imperfect is like a video or background music. It describes ongoing situations, habitual actions ("used to"), or how things were in the past, with no definite ending.

2. The Imperfect in "Historia de Taxi" (Background & Descriptions)

Ricardo Arjona uses the Imperfect tense to set the scene and describe the situation before the main action happens. You use the Imperfect for:

• Background descriptions & characteristics: "era una rubia preciosa" (she was a beautiful blonde), "llevaba minifalda" (she was wearing a miniskirt).
• Time in the past: "eran las diez con cuarenta" (it was ten forty).
• Feelings & ongoing states: "me temblaba la mano" (my hand was shaking), "yo estaba idiotizado" (I was mesmerized).
• Ongoing actions without a defined end: "una lágrima negra rodaba en su mejilla" (a black tear was rolling down her cheek).

3. The Preterite in "Historia de Taxi" (The Actions)

Arjona uses the Preterite to move the story forward with specific, completed events. Notice how these actions happen once and are finished:

• "me hicieron la parada" (they flagged me down).
• "me dijo me llamo Norma" (she told me my name is Norma).
• "le sonreí en el espejo" (I smiled at her in the mirror).
• "fuimos al bar... entramos" (we went to the bar... we entered).

4. Working Together: Interrupted Actions

These two tenses often work together in the same sentence. The Imperfect sets up the ongoing background action, and the Preterite is the sudden event that interrupts it.

Conjugate the verbs to form interrupted action sentences. Remember: use the Imperfect for the action in progress, and the Preterite for the action that interrupts.
