1 Part 1: Useful Pirate Vocabulary (Vocabulario Útil)

El pirata / El corsario: The pirate / The privateer (hired by governments).
El tesoro: The treasure.
La tripulación: The crew.
El barco / El navío: The ship.
Saquear / Capturar: To plunder / To capture.
Navegar: To sail.
Temido / Valiente: Feared / Brave.

2 Part 2: Grammar Snapshot (Explicación Gramatical)

In Spanish, we use two main past tenses, and they often work together like a movie!

Pretérito Simple (Preterite)

Think of it as a snapshot. It tells you exactly when something happened and focuses on completed actions with a clear beginning and end. Ayer, el pirata encontró el tesoro. (Yesterday, the pirate found the treasure).

Pretérito Imperfecto (Imperfect)

Think of it as background music or a video. It describes ongoing situations, habitual actions ("used to"), or how things were in the past (like weather or physical traits). El barco era grande y hacía frío. (The ship was big and it was cold).

Interrupted Actions: When you use them together, the Imperfect describes the ongoing background action, and the Preterite is the sudden event that interrupts it.

El pirata navegaba (Imperfect) cuando vio (Preterite) una isla.

Lee la historia de dos piratas reales y observa los verbos en negrita.

El terror del Caribe

En el siglo XVIII, Edward Teach, conocido como Barbanegra, era (Imperfect) uno de los piratas más famosos de la historia. Él tenía (Imperfect) una imponente barba negra y siempre infundía (Imperfect) mucho miedo. Él navegaba (Imperfect) en su famoso barco, el Queen Anne's Revenge. Un día, mientras él buscaba (Imperfect) tesoros en el Caribe, vio (Preterite) un barco mercante y lo capturó (Preterite) sin derramar sangre.

Exercise 1: Choose the correct tense (¿Pretérito o Imperfecto?)

Circle or write the correct verb. Clue: Is it a specific completed action (Preterite) or a background description/habit (Imperfect)?

Cuando Barbanegra [ fue / era ] joven, [ vivió / vivía ] en Inglaterra.
Ayer, los piratas [ encontraron / encontraban ] un cofre lleno de oro.
La noche [ estuvo / estaba ] oscura y [ hizo / hacía ] mucho viento en el mar.
Ching Shih [ lideró / lideraba ] una flota gigantesca en Asia durante muchos años.
El corsario William Kidd [ protegió / protegía ] rutas comerciales cuando, de repente, se [ convirtió / convertía ] en un proscrito.

Exercise 2: The Interrupted Pirate (Acciones Interrumpidas)

Conjugate the verbs. Use Imperfect for the ongoing action (the background) and Preterite for the interrupting action.

El pirata Calico Jack (dormir, Imperfect) en el barco cuando la marina inglesa lo (capturar, Preterite).

Exercise 3: The Irregular Rule-Breakers (Los Irregulares)

Change these common irregular verbs into the Pretérito Simple to complete the sentences.

(Tener): El mes pasado, el capitán un problema grave con su tripulación.
(Hacer): Ayer, los marineros una gran fiesta en el puerto.
(Ir): El fin de semana pasado, mis amigos y yo a buscar barcos hundidos.
(Ser): ¡Esa batalla la más épica de la historia!

5 Part 5: Content Creation (¡Crea tu propia leyenda!)

Instructions: You are a famous pirate captain who just survived a massive storm! Write a short paragraph (4-6 sentences) about what happened to you.

Your story must include:

At least 2 verbs in the Imperfect (e.g., to describe what the weather was like or what you were doing).
At least 2 verbs in the Preterite (e.g., a sudden action, what you did, or what you found).
Bonus words to use: El barco, de repente (suddenly), la tripulación, el tesoro.

Nota para el estudiante: Recuerda que los verbos irregulares clave del pretérito son "fui", "estuve", "tuve" e "hice". Y para el imperfecto, "era", "iba" y "veía" son tus únicos irregulares.
