The Pretérito Indefinido is used to talk about actions that started and completely finished in the past. Think of it as a closed chapter in a book. E.g., "Fui a México hace diez años."

Sequence of Events
Actions that took place one after another in a story.

Sudden Interruption
An event that suddenly interrupts another action in progress.
