Los Números

From Zero to Infinity

In this lesson, we will learn how to count, buy things, and tell our age in Spanish.

Let's Start

1. The Unique Numbers (0-15)

The first 15 numbers have unique names. You just have to memorize them!

0 Cero
1 Uno
2 Dos
3 Tres
4 Cuatro
5 Cinco
6 Seis
7 Siete
8 Ocho
9 Nueve
10 Diez
11 Once
12 Doce
13 Trece
14 Catorce
15 Quince

2. The "Fusion" Rule (16-29)

Numbers between 16 and 29 are special. Instead of three words, they fuse into one single word.

16 - 19

The "Z" changes to "C"

Diez + y + seis
Dieciséis

Don't forget the accent on 16!

21 - 29

The "E" changes to "I"

Veinte + y + dos
Veintidós

Accents on 22, 23, and 26.

3. The "Separated" Rule (30-99)

Good news! From 30 onwards, we stop fusing words. We use three separate words connected by the bridge "y".

The Tens (Decenas)

30 Treinta
40 Cuarenta
50 Cincuenta
60 Sesenta
70 Setenta
80 Ochenta
90 Noventa

58 Cincuenta y ocho
99 Noventa y nueve

4. The "100" Dilemma

CIEN

Use EXACTLY for 100

  • Exact number 100.
  • Before a noun (100 books, 100 people).

✅ "Tengo cien dólares."

✅ "Tengo cien libros."

CIENTO...

Use for 101 to 199

  • When followed by another number.
  • Think of it as "One hundred AND..."

✅ "Ciento uno (101)."

✅ "Ciento cincuenta (150)."

Important!

Never say "Un cien" or "Un ciento". Just "Cien" or "Ciento".

4. The Hundreds (200-900)

To form hundreds, we generally use the formula: Number + Cientos.

The "Easy" Ones

Just add -cientos to the number.

200
Doscientos
300
Trescientos
400
Cuatrocientos
600
Seiscientos
800
Ochocientos

The "Tricky" Ones

The root word changes slightly!

500 Not "Cincocientos"

Quinientos

700 Not "Sietecientos"

Setecientos

900 Not "Nuevecientos"

Novecientos

5. The Gender Trap (200-900)

Unlike English, numbers from 200 to 900 behave like adjectives. They must match the gender of the object.

Masculine Objects

Ending: -OS

200 Gatos Doscientos
400 Libros Cuatrocientos
500 Pesos Quinientos

Feminine Objects

Ending: -AS

200 Casas Doscientas
400 Personas Cuatrocientas
500 Flores Quinientas

Spelling Changes!

Watch out for 500 (Quinientos), 700 (Setecientos), and 900 (Novecientos). They change their root spelling!

Big Numbers

The two giants: Mil vs. Millón

MIL

1,000

⚠️ Important Rule:

Never say "Un mil".

Just say "Mil".

2,000 Dos mil

MILLÓN

1,000,000

✅ Important Rule:

Always use "Un" for 1 million.
