The eternal dilemma.
Identity (Ser) vs. State (Estar).
In English, you have one verb: "To Be".
You say: "I am Juan" and "I am tired."
(Same verb, different meanings.)
Identity & Origin
State & Location
In Spanish, we must choose the correct verb for the context.
The permanent "To Be".
Think of SER as a permanent label. We use it to define what or who something is.
Category: Identity & Origin
Use SER to introduce yourself or others (Names & Relationships).
Jobs define who you are.
*Tip: Don't use "un/una" for jobs.
Where are you from?
Always use the formula: SER + DE.
Category: Description & Stuff
Use SER for physical traits (color, size) or personality. These are considered "essential" traits.
What is it made of? Whose is it?
Again, use the formula: SER + DE.
The temporary "To Be".
Think of ESTAR as a "status update". We use it to talk about states, emotions, and locations.
Category: Position & Place
Even if a building is permanent (it doesn't move), its location always uses ESTAR.
"Look for the word EN (in/at)."
I am at home.
"Yo estoy en casa."
The restaurant is in the city.
"El restaurante está en la ciudad."
Where are they?
"¿Dónde están ellos?"
Category: Emotions & Health
Feelings change quickly. Use ESTAR.
Health is a temporary state (hopefully!).
How something is right now (Food, Temperature).
Memorize these two acronyms to instantly know which verb to pick.
Be careful! Asking "Where is it?" changes depending on what "it" is.
People, Buildings, Objects
If it has a physical body and occupies space...
"El libro está en la mesa."
(The book is on the table)
Parties, Classes, Concerts
An event is not a physical object. It "takes place" or "happens".
"La fiesta es en mi casa."
(The party is/takes place at my house)
Click the correct verb. If you fail, I'll tell you why!
Complete the postcard using SER or ESTAR.
