¿Qué significa "Hay"?

In English you have "There is" (singular) and "There are" (plural). In Spanish it’s simpler: we use one word for both — HAY.

Singular

Hay un gato.

There is a cat.

Plural

Hay dos gatos.

There are two cats.

One word — HAY — for both "there is" and "there are".

Ejemplos con Hay

Look at the image. You can describe what exists using Hay + a number or un/una + noun.

Hay un gato.

There is a cat.

More examples:

Hay una mesa. (There is a table.)

Hay dos libros. (There are two books.)

Hay tres sillas. (There are three chairs.)

La regla de oro

This is the most common mistake! After Hay you must NOT use el, la, los, las. Use numbers (un, dos, tres) or un/una/unos/unas.

Numbers: un, dos, tres… Hay dos mesas.	Definite articles: el, la, los, las
Un/una/unos/unas: Hay una lámpara.	Wrong: Hay la mesa. → Correct: Hay una mesa.

Error: "Hay la mesa". Correct: "Hay una mesa."

Hay + Sustantivos Plurales

English Rule: For plural things, you don’t need "some" or "any".
Simply use: Hay + noun (plural)

Preguntas: ¿Hay...?

To ask "Is there?" or "Are there?", use the same word Hay and add question marks (¿…?). Change your intonation (voice goes up at the end).

Statement (affirmative)

Hay un hotel en la ciudad.

Question

¿Hay un hotel en la ciudad?

Is there a hotel in the city?

Más ejemplos: ¿Hay estudiantes en la clase? ¿Hay tomates en el mercado?

Forma negativa: No hay

To say "There isn’t" or "There aren’t", put No before Hay: No + Hay.

No hay luz en el baño.

There is no light in the bathroom.

No hay teléfonos aquí.

There are no phones here.

No hay leche. (There is no milk.)
