This slide explains grammatical gender. In Spanish, every noun is either masculine or feminine. You will use different words for “the” (el / la) depending on the noun’s gender. Read both boxes below to understand how it works and why it matters.
Every noun has a gender: masculine or feminine. The article (el/la, un/una) and adjectives must match the noun’s gender.
Saying “la libro” or “el casa” sounds wrong. Learning gender from the start helps you speak naturally.
Tip: muchas veces la terminación de la palabra nos da una pista.
Often the ending of the word gives you a hint (e.g. -o often = masculine, -a often = feminine).
The most useful rule: words ending in -o usually use el (the); words ending in -a usually use la (the). Look at the two boxes below and remember: el = masculine, la = feminine.
Suelen terminar en -o. Usually end in -o.
el gato (the cat)
el libro, el niño, el perro
Suelen terminar en -a. Usually end in -a.
la casa (the house)
la mesa, la niña, la ventana
Artículo masculino = el | Artículo femenino = la
Masculine article = el | Feminine article = la
Instructions: Practice: “El” or “La”? Look at the word’s ending (-o or -a) and type the correct article in each box.
Instructions: Important exceptions! Some words end in -a but are masculine (they use el). They often come from Greek. Words ending in -ma, -pa, or -ta usually use el.
El problema
(the problem)
El mapa
(the map)
El planeta
(the planet)
El idioma
(the language)
El sistema
(the system)
El programa
(the program)
El clima
(the climate)
El tema
(the topic)
Terminación -ma, -pa, -ta = Masculino (El)
Ending in -ma, -pa, -ta = Masculine (El)
Challenge: Exception or Rule? Careful! Some words end in -a and are feminine (la), but others are exceptions (el). Write the correct article.
Smart Tip: Many Spanish feminine endings relate to English words! Use these patterns to guess the gender correctly almost every time. It's not just lists; it's logic.
Estas terminaciones indican conceptos abstractos.
These endings usually indicate abstract concepts, not physical objects.
The Secret: Why do these words end in -o but use
La?
Usually because they are short versions of longer feminine words!
(Except "Mano", which is just a true rebel).
La foto
Short for: La fotografía
(the photo)
La moto
Short for: La motocicleta
(the motorcycle)
La radio
Short for: La radiodifusión
(the radio)
La mano
Exception!(the hand)
Grammar note:
Because they are feminine, adjectives must match:
La moto rápida (not rápido).
Challenge: Mixed Rules! Decide: is it -ción/-sión (la), -ma (el), or a special -o word (la mano, la foto)? Type the article.
Soluciones / Solutions:
1. La canción (-ción)
2. La mano (-o fem)
3. El programa (-ma)
4. La televisión (-sión)
5. La foto (-o fem)
6. La ciudad (-ad)
7. El tema (-ma)
8. La libertad (-tad)
The "Chameleon" Rule: Words ending in -ista or -nte do not change form! You only change the article (El / La) to show if it's a man or a woman.
¡Cuidado con la "A"!
No digas "taxisto" ni
"estudianta". La palabra no cambia.
Don't say "taxisto" or
"estudianta". The word never changes.
Context Challenge: Complete the sentences with “el” or “la”. Watch out for special words like agua (masculine for sound) and día (masculine exception).
Soluciones / Solutions:
1. La música
2. El día (excepción)
3. El agua (sonido)
4. El problema (-ma)
5. La mano (excepción)
6. El mapa (-ma)
Ultimate Challenge: Mix of everything! Use all the rules you learned (-ción, -ma, exceptions, people). Write the correct article.
Soluciones Finales:
1. La habitación (-ción)
2. El clima (-ma)
3. La radio (-o fem)
4. La decisión (-sión)
5. El/La poeta (persona)
6. La libertad (-tad)
