The Power of "NO"

Mastering Spanish Negatives!

Spy Tucaneo

¡Aprende a decir NO como un profesional!

Welcome to the dark side of Spanish grammar! Today, you will learn why being negative in Spanish is actually the most positive thing you can do for your fluency. Get ready to master double, triple, and even quadruple negatives!

Fundamental Rule

Double Negatives Are Mandatory!

Why in Spanish?

In English, double negatives are a big "NO-NO" because a negative and a negative make a positive (e.g., "I haven't got nothing" means you do have something).

But in Spanish, double negatives are not only correct, they are mandatory! They reinforce the meaning.

The Magic Formula

No + Verb + Negative Word

(-) + (-) = Spanish Perfection

Examples:

1

No tengo nada.

I haven't got anything / I have nothing.

2

No quiero beber nada.

I don't want to drink anything.

3

No había nadie en la fiesta.

There was no one at the party.

Quadruple Negative:

Yo no hablo con nadie nunca tampoco.

(I, too, don't talk to anybody ever)

The Tricky Twins

Ningún vs. Ninguno

Both mean "none" or "not any", but they play different roles.

Ningún

Indefinite Adjective

It ALWAYS goes before a singular masculine noun. It describes the noun.

No hay ningún hombre aquí.

(There are no men here)

Ninguno

Indefinite Pronoun

It REPLACES the noun when we already know what we're talking about. It stands alone.

¿Tienes ideas?

No, no tengo ninguna.

(No, I have none)

💡

Pro Tip

Both change to feminine (ninguna) if the noun is feminine. Plurals are rarely used!
