The Core Rules: Superiority & Inferiority

In Spanish, we don't add endings like "-er" to adjectives (no "taller" or "faster").
Instead, we use a simple formula!

Superioridad

MÁS + adj/sust + QUE

(More ... than)

Pepe es más alto que Juana.

Pepe is taller than Juana.

Madrid tiene más habitantes que Sevilla.

Madrid has more inhabitants than Seville.

Inferioridad

MENOS + adj/sust + QUE

(Less ... than)

Juana es menos musculosa que Pepe.

Juana is less muscular than Pepe.

Pro-Tip / Don't forget!

The adjective must match the first noun in gender and number!

Ej: La casa es más grande / Los perros son más rápidos.

[TRANSICIÓN A LA GRAMÁTICA] Alright, let's look at the "magic formulas". In Spanish, we don't say "taller" or "faster". It's actually much easier! We just use MÁS (more) or MENOS (less). [BLOQUE 1: SUPERIORIDAD] (Pulsar para revelar el bloque de Superioridad). Look at the cyan formula: MÁS + adjective + QUE. "Pepe es MÁS alto QUE Juana." (Repeat after me). [BLOQUE 2: INFERIORIDAD] (Pulsar para revelar el bloque de Inferioridad). Now the opposite. MENOS + adjective + QUE. "Juana es MENOS musculosa QUE Pepe." [PRO-TIP VITAL] (Pulsar para revelar el tip). Very important trick! The adjective always matches the FIRST thing you are talking about. If we talk about "las casas" (feminine plural), the adjective must be feminine plural!

The "As... As" Rule

When things are equal, we don't use "más" or "menos". We use the Spanish versions of "as... as". Pay close attention, because the formula changes depending on what you are comparing!

1. Para Adjetivos (Cualidades)

Unchanging

TAN + adjetivo + COMO

Marta es tan guapa como Susana.

Marta is as pretty as Susana.

2. Para Sustantivos (Cantidades)

Changes Gender/Number!

TANTO(S)/A(S) + sustantivo + COMO

Tengo tantos diccionarios como Ana.

I have as many dictionaries as Ana.

Watch out! "Tanto" acts like an adjective here. It MUST match the noun!

3. Para Verbos (Acciones)

Verbo + TANTO COMO

El niño come tanto como su padre.

The boy eats as much as his father.

TAN = Descriptions

TANTO = Quantities & Actions

[TRANSICIÓN - EL RETO DE LA IGUALDAD] When things are equal, we don't use "más" or "menos". We use the Spanish versions of "as... as". Pay close attention, because the formula changes depending on what you are comparing! [BLOQUE 1 - ADJETIVOS] (Pulsar para mostrar el bloque verde). First, descriptions (adjectives). We use TAN + adjetivo + COMO. "Marta es TAN guapa COMO Susana." TAN never changes! It's always TAN. [BLOQUE 2 - SUSTANTIVOS] (Pulsar para mostrar el bloque amarillo). Second, quantities (nouns). We use TANTO + sustantivo + COMO. Watch out! "Tanto" acts like an adjective here. It MUST match the noun in gender and number! "Tengo TANTOS diccionarios COMO Ana." (Dictionaries is masculine plural, so TANTOS). [BLOQUE 3 - VERBOS] (Pulsar para mostrar el bloque morado). Third, actions (verbs). We just put the verb, and then TANTO COMO together. "El niño come TANTO COMO su padre." [RESUMEN FINAL] Remember the quick trick at the bottom: TAN is for descriptions. TANTO is for quantities and actions!

The Rebels: Irregular Comparatives

Just like in English we say "better" instead of "more good", Spanish has 4 special words that DON'T need "más" or "menos". They are strong enough on their own!

Bueno/a (Good)

MEJOR (Better)

El aceite de oliva es mejor que el de girasol.

Olive oil is better than sunflower oil.

Malo/a (Bad)

PEOR (Worse)

Este examen es peor que el anterior.

This test is worse than the last one.

Grande (Big/Old)

MAYOR (Older/Bigger)

Mi madre es mayor que mi tía.

My mother is older than my aunt.

Pequeño (Small/Young)

MENOR (Younger/Smaller)

Mi hermano es menor que yo.

My brother is younger than me.

PRO-TIP: The Golden Rule

NEVER use "más" or "menos" with these words!

[INTRODUCCIÓN - LOS REBELDES] Just like in English we say "better" instead of "more good", Spanish has 4 special words that DON'T need "más" or "menos". They are strong enough on their own! We call them the rebels. [REVELANDO LOS 4 IRREGULARES] (Pasa por cada uno y haz que repitan). 1. Bueno becomes MEJOR (Better). "El aceite de oliva es mejor". 2. Malo becomes PEOR (Worse). "Este examen es peor". 3. Grande becomes MAYOR (Older/Bigger). This is super important for age! "Mi madre es mayor". 4. Pequeño becomes MENOR (Younger/Smaller). "Mi hermano es menor". [LA REGLA DE ORO - EXTREMADAMENTE IMPORTANTE] (Pulsa para mostrar la advertencia roja). Look at the red warning sign! NEVER say "más mejor" or "más peor". That is a huge mistake! Just say "mejor". And remember, if you compare plural things (like "mis zapatos"), you must add an -ES (mis zapatos son mejores).
